Now that Record Store Day and Black Friday has been firmly established there are certain types of releases that almost seem mandatory. Record collectors will most certainly be excited about a new, live Grateful Dead release (11/18/72 Hofheinz Pavilion). There will be at least one grunge 7” (Mother Love Bone). The Flaming Lips will come out with something unique and kooky (Imagene Peise: Atlas Eets Christmas), and Neil Young will have a new box set (Official Release Series Vol. 2). Record Store Day is built off these types of releases, and it probably wouldn’t be possible without them. There’s something incredibly exciting about adding to one’s New Order collection (1981-1982 EP), but let’s not forget that Black Friday is also a great time to pick up limited edition gifts for friends and family. Luckily, this year’s releases will appeal to vinyl lovers of all kinds.
The Ramones – Morrissey Curates The Ramones (12” LP)
Nothing says “Merry Christmas” quite like a “Teenage Lobotomy.” This compilation of some of The Ramones’ most well-loved songs was picked by Morrissey of all people, who happens to be a big fan. This would be the perfect gift for a 13-year-old kid to go with their first Ramones t-shirt. It also might appeal to a 25-year-old record store employee who loves to sing along to “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” when she thinks nobody is listening. To be honest, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t need more Ramones on vinyl in their life.
Faith No More – Motherf***** (7” single)
Faith No More have a new album coming out in April 2015. This will be their first album in 18 years. For those of us who can’t wait until the Spring to hear it, there will be a 7” single of the new song “Motherf*****” coming out on Black Friday. Do not miss it.
